Spurgeon said this quote during a sermon delivered on Thursday evening Nov 8th, 1883. This quote is powerful today as we see peoples in our nations simply deciding what they want to be, in direct rebellion to God. And while it is okay to freely choose to be anything you wish, and that will be tolerated by society, choosing to be a Christian is not tolerated.
There is a version for the Americans and the subjects of King Charles!
A fuller version of the quote is here:
"In a free country like this, you may be almost anything that you like except a Christian. There is no liberty for you and you will find that the dogs of Hell will bark at you because you are a stranger and a foreigner in this world! If you were a child at home, they would not trouble you, but you are of a different race from the men of the world who have their portion in this life—and, as you pass along, they will let you know that you do not belong to them."
